Best anti-virus for Windows 7?

May 5, 2011 by

Im looking for a few things here: Optimal protection from spyware, trojans, etc. and minor usage of runtime memory and CPU. Possibly a firewall?

Things I do: Browse the internet, occasionally download freeware, torrent (from trusted peers), run a ventrilo server, audiogalaxy, email.

Those are the main things, but it’s not limited to those things I listed. I am looking for a frequently updated program thats going to protect my OS and files from attacks. If you wouldn’t mind telling me which program protects from what and why you suggest it.

Thanks in advance for any input!

Having tried different free and paid programs I’ve settled on Microsoft Security Essentials and using Malwarebytes as a “second opinion” scanner. Security Essentials works and it doesn’t bug you, it’s the least annoying and most straight-forward program I’ve used. If you are semi-smart about what you download and what you do on the internet you should have no problems.

I’ve been using AVG on my Windows machines for years, but the absolute best virus protection is to NOT BE AN IDIOT.

Don’t click on scam web pages that look like Windows dialog boxes. If the title bar looks different from the other title bars on your system, it’s a fake. If there are two title bars, it’s also a fake. Don’t click on those.

The next best virus protection is to not run Windows at all, and still, to NOT BE AN IDIOT. I use Linux and Mac OS X on most of my computers.

And then after that, the best free antivirus is AVG. Just go to free.avg.com

http://theinfoheap.com/spyware/ has some good information on how to remove spyware and viruses and some free programs that prevent spyware and viruses as well.

Microsoft Security Essentials – it’s lightweight and the website says it will defend against spyware, viruses, worms, trojans, and other malicious software.
